Assistant Commissioner for Police Operation Livai Driu has issued a stern warning to Fijians to observe the upcoming New Year’s celebrations responsibly.

A recent incident in which two youngsters threw stones at a 22-year-old woman as she was on a moving bus on December 13 prompted the comments.

Kinisimere Dileqa is grateful today, stating that things could have been worse, like losing her sight.

Report

After the stoning incident, she reported it at the Totogo Police Station, Suva. She was then referred to Valelevu and Nasinu Police Stations.

“My eyes were really swollen and hurt from the hit. It wasn’t just a small stone. It was a good size. It seemed like they were throwing stones at every car that went past,” she said.

“The two boys looked like they were 14 or 15 years of age. They took down our statement and referred us to the Valelevu Police Station,” she claimed.

“From there, they told us again to go to the Nasinu Police Station.”

Ms Dileqa said her family took her to the hospital to get her swollen eyes checked.

According to the doctor, it was fortunate that the stone struck her eyelid rather than her eyeball because things could have turned out much worse.

It took around two weeks for her injury to heal completely.

Ms Dileqa indicated that this had happened in the past over New Year’s. She was waiting to hear the results of the police investigations.

ACP Driu asserted that everyone was subject to the law, regardless of age.

“When we find those that are continuously engaging in these activities, they will be taken to task,” he said.
