Twenty-six new tsunami sirens will be installed extending from the Suva peninsula towards the Western side of Viti Levu to Rakiraki.

This is through the support of the Japanese Government.

Minister for Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management, Inia Seruiratu said currently 13 sirens were installed along the Suva peninsula, this was through the support of New Zealand, the European Union and the Pacific Community (SPC).

Mr Seruiratu said the installation of more tsunami sirens would enhance early warning systems in Fiji promoting better preparedness and rapid response.

He said Fiji must prepare better for tomorrow.

He also urged Fijians that when building their homes, they must be a category four or five standard to resist category 4 or 5 cyclones.

“Let’s not do development for the sake of doing development; it must address resilience, resilience must be at the core of every work and every development that we do,” Mr Seruiratu said.
