Women have been encouraged to support young people who want to start up a business.

Losana Marama, a representative from West Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises encouraged participants at a women’s conference at Gurukul Primary School at Saweni in Lautoka about the use of the Young Entrepreneurship Scheme (YES) programme.

Ms Marama informed them that the aim of the scheme was to provide assistance in the form of grants to young and budding entrepreneurs who had innovative and bankable ideas and projects.

Ministry of Commerce, Trade, Tourism and Transport, Government provides financial support of up to $30,000 to successful entrepreneurs between the ages of 18 to 40 years to develop or expand their innovative business ideas, Ms Marama said.

“If your child has innovative and creative ideas, they can access this funding,” Ms Marama said.

“Sometimes they see this TikTok business idea that is practiced overseas, but has not been done in Fiji; they can come to us, and we can help facilitate them getting this fund.

“The limit is $30,000. It is a grant, not a loan. It is fully funded. If you see a skill in a child, try to motivate and empower them.”.

Ms Marama said that the Government recognised the critical role young entrepreneurs play in contributing to the growth of our Economy.

“As parents and guardians, we must motivate and encourage our children to be ‘job creator’ rather than a ‘job seeker’,” she added.

The West Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) office is located at Rogorogoivuda House in Lautoka.
