Thirty-two women lost their lives at the hands of their partners between 2018 to 2022.

Acting Commissioner of Police Juki Fong Chew said the Force was worried about the extent of crimes perpetrated against children and girls.

Out of the 7,226 reported cases, a staggering 5,017 victims were girls.

Police received more than 2,400 annual reports of crimes against women from 2018 to 2022.

“The victims are mostly aged between 18 to 39 years, with assault being the most prevalent offence,” he said.

Crimes Reported Include:

  • Assault causing actual bodily harm recording - 9126 cases,
  • Murder – 32 cases,
  • Common Assault – 1363
  • Sexual offences 1555 cases

“We have the potential to make a difference and to stop violence against women and girls, if everyone takes responsibility for their roles and responsibilities which is needed.

“A similar approach is needed at the regional level. There is no one better suited to come up with the best approaches contextualized to the needs of the Pacific then, us, the current generation of Pacific law enforcement officers and practitioners,” he added.

Mr Chew said the launch of the Fiji National Action Plan to Prevent Violence against Women and Girls 2023-2028, two weeks ago, was a necessary step in combating such issues.
