$3M Vanua Levu roadworks project to begin early 2026

A major $3 million roadworks project for Vanua Levu is set to begin in early 2026, marking a significant investment in infrastructure for Fiji’s Northern Division.
Minister for Public Works, Meteorological Services, and Transport Ro Filipe Tuisawau confirmed the development on Thursday, revealing that planning is already underway with support from the People’s Republic of China.
“The Chinese technical and assessment team is now working on the road design and other key aspects,” Mr Tuisawau said.

“Once they complete this stage, they will travel to Fiji to work closely with the Public Works Department and the Fiji Roads Authority.”
That visit is expected by the third quarter of this year.
The Minister said consultations and design approvals will be finalised before a groundbreaking ceremony is held in early 2026.
“This will mark the beginning of the mobilisation phase, with actual construction expected to begin in the first quarter of 2026,” he said.
Mr Tuisawau said the project would deliver vital infrastructure for Vanua Levu, improving road access and boosting economic growth.
The initiative highlights continued cooperation between Fiji and China, with road development identified as a priority for the North.
The Ministry has pledged to provide ongoing updates as the project progresses.
