Five cases of leptospirosis have now been confirmed in Kadavu and one suspected case in Ba following Tropical Cyclone Harold on April 8.

Of the five cases, one was transferred to the Colonial War Memorial Hospital  (CWMH) last Friday with four others admitted at the Vunisea Hospital.

This was revealed in the assessment report of the island adding that the estimated damage assessment for its health infrastructure $1.21million.

Ministry of Health and Medical Services officials deployed to the affected areas had worked on the reduction of dengue, leptospirosis, typhoid and diarrheal diseases.

The assessment report stated that public health awareness was being carried out in affected areas with awareness on post-cyclone diseases such as those mentioned.

“We continue to work on improving the sanitary living conditions for those affected by TC Harold including all Fijians,” the report stated.

“These include distribution of 73 water, sanitary and hygiene kits in the Southern Lau Group with relevant awareness, disinfection of flood-affected communities and evacuation centres, waste management, nutritional assessments and COVID-19 awareness.”
