Students at Valelawa Primary School in Macuata no longer have to learn in tents, thanks to a newly completed $45,000 Early Childhood Education (ECE) classroom funded by the Ministry of Education.
The new facility was officially opened by Minister for Education Aseri Radrodro, following his visit to the school in February 2025, where he witnessed firsthand the difficult learning conditions young students faced.
Moved by the situation, the Ministry swiftly allocated a $45,000 building grant under its Early Childhood Education Facilities programme to construct a safe and permanent classroom.

The project forms part of a broader initiative aimed at improving infrastructure in rural schools, with a total programme budget of $200,000 supporting six schools this year.
“This investment is not just in infrastructure it’s an investment in the future of our children,” Mr Radrodro said at the classroom opening. “Every child deserves access to a safe and conducive learning environment, no matter where they live.”
The new facility is expected to significantly improve the learning experience for early learners at Valelawa, who had spent months studying under temporary shelters.
The initiative also reflects the People’s Coalition Government’s ongoing commitment to quality education and equitable development across remote and underserved communities.
“This is a proud day for Valelawa, and a sign of what can happen when communities and government work together to prioritise education,” said a school representative during the ceremony.
