Fiji’s healthcare workers and patients will benefit from a whopping $466 million allocation for the Ministry of Health and Medical Services from the 2025-2026 National Budget.

This is to strengthen public service delivery and improving access to medicines.

The allocation will fund the salaries of doctors, nurses and allied health workers, upgrade health facilities, and improve the supply of essential drugs and equipment.

“This is a budget that puts people first,” Finance Minister Professor Biman Prasad told Parliament while announcing the Budget on Friday.

“We’re focused on public health, prevention, and making sure Fijians have what they need when they walk into a health facility.”

Key initiatives include:

  • A nationwide shift toward primary and preventive care.
  • Major upgrades to hospital pharmacies and procurement systems.
  • New medicine tenders awarded, and an online tracking platform (MSupply) introduced to prevent stock outs.
  • A supply agreement with the Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission to ensure cheaper, quality-assured medicines.

In addition, the free medical scheme which partners with 64 private general practitioners, dentists and labs would continue. It provides free consultations and services for social welfare recipients, pensioners, and those earning under $30,000 annually.

“This is about fixing the basics,” said Mr Prasad.

“No one should go without care because they can’t afford it.”
