Forty-seven young Fijians graduated with trade qualifications from Montfort Boys’ Town in Veisari on Saturday, equipped with skills to fill workforce gaps in the country.
The graduates received Fiji National University Trade Certificate Class 3 and Level 3 qualifications in building, cabinet making, fitting and machining, and motor vehicle mechanics.
Minister for Employment, Productivity and Workplace Relations Agni Deo Singh, who officiated the ceremony, said Montfort graduates were highly regarded by employers.

Skills shortages
He acknowledged Fiji faced serious skills shortages following the post-COVID exodus of trained workers to Australia and New Zealand.
“We produce young people with skills, they develop those skills, they spend a few years here, and then Australia and New Zealand welcome them with open arms,” he said.
Mr Singh encouraged parents to consider technical vocational training for their children, noting that many academic graduates remained unemployed while skilled tradespeople were in high demand worldwide.
Director Brother Shaji Paul said the institution was committed to providing training pathways that led to fulfilling careers locally and abroad.
“By training students in technical skill fields, Montfort is preparing the students to enter the workforce, increasing their employability and improving their ability to provide for themselves, their families and their communities,” he said.
Top honours went to Joseva Lacaidruta Matasau Kaikaba who received the Dux award, while Meli Bond Silaitoga was named Best All-Round Student.
Montfort Boys’ Town, located 15km from Suva, provides vocational training for young people regardless of race or religion.
