Among the 28 devotees was a five-year-old boy and the only child to have their faith tested by walking barefoot on hot charcoal in a six-meter pit.

During a fire walking ceremony at Sangam Mahamariamma Firewalking Temple in Vunivau, Labasa on July 20, Vaydhish Prasad crossed the pit five times like other adult participants.

During an interview, the Year One student of Qawa Primary School thanked his parents, Vignesh Prasad, a police officer and Reshmi Prasad, a teacher.

“I was told that my grandfather, Dhirendra Prasad for 38 years participated in this traditional program and then when I saw my father doing the same, I also had the desire to continue the family tradition despite being young,” Vaydhish said. “I started last year but only touched the pit with my feet until this year I decided to give commitment.”

The eldest of one sibling from Vunivau, Labasa said for 21 days he didn’t eat meat and stayed at the temple for ten days giving full devotion to the goddess, Mata Mariamma, in prayer prior to the fire walking ceremony.

With a great smile he showed his feet saying he didn’t get burnt and was good in health.

His mother said it was toughest decision in her life to grant permission to her son but with husband’s support and faith in god, she overcame fears.

President of the temple, Nalinesh Sami said since the temple was established in 1930 it was the first time a five-year-old boy participated in this fire walking ceremony.

“The successful ten days of prayer and devotion had made it possible for the devotees to cross the fire pit without any injury,” Mr Sami said. “We are delighted to see children showing interest in participating religious program and always welcome to assist them.”

Qawa Primary School head teacher Rajnesh Swamy said he was surprised to witness his student and felt a deep sense of pride.

“Being at a young age and doing it alone without fear, Vaydhish showed courage,” Mr Swamy said. “His gesture showed that there is always a way to connect with god and receive blessings despite being young.”
