Six people have been left homeless after a fire destroyed a three bedroom house at Navakasigani in Labasa yesterday.

The owner of the house, Munsami Chetty, said they were all asleep when the fire started around 1:20am.

“My wife, Chandra Wati, and I are heart patients and slept early after putting our three grandchildren (Mahi Chetty, 12, Myra Chetty, six, and Kairav Chetty, five) to bed,” Mr Chetty said.

“My son, Krishneel Chetty was sleeping in his room after returning from my brother’s house.”

He said his oldest granddaughter, Mahi, a Year Eight student of Saint Augustine Primary School, saw the fire and alerted everyone.

“My brother, Kumar Sami Chetty and his family helped my wife and I get out of the house,” the 75-year-old father of four children said.

“While we were trying to save our belongings, Mahi on her own drove the vehicle away from the house to save it from being destroyed in fire.”

Her father, a casual joinery worker, said if it wasn’t for Mahi, they all would have

died.

“We are facing a lot of family problems because my wife is away,” Mr Chetty said.

“I couldn’t save my children’s school stationeries, bags, shoes and uniform.”

He said they don’t know how to rebuild their lives and home.

He had taken the whole family seeking shelter at the elder brother’s house in Solove, Labasa.

The family could be contacted on 2037560 for those who wished to assist them.

Meanwhile, the National Fire Authority headquarters office confirmed that officers from the Labasa Station attended to the fire call and were carrying out an investigation.
