The Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) Naval Division is yet to complete a damage assessment on newly-commissioned RFNS Puamau.

Salvage operations are expected to begin next week for the vessel that ran aground on a reef on Fulaga Island, Lau, on Monday.

RFMF Naval Division Commander, Commodore Humphrey Tawake said the extent of the damage would be finalised when assessments were completed.

“The cost of the salvaging exercise is yet to be determined.

Right now, our priority is the safety of the crew, salvage operations, and protection of the marine environment from any oil spill from the vessel.

We are taking precautionary measures, should there be one, “ he said.

He said while circumstances leading to the incident were regrettable, the incident would be comprehensively investigated and necessary due process would be undertaken.

“This will be done so an understanding can be achieved on what transpired and how it can be avoided.

The challenging conditions of the Fulaga passage underscore the need for thorough planning and pro-active measures with salvage experts to address any potential contingencies.

“We extend our gratitude to the Australian government, Pacific Maritime Security Programme, local and regional partners for their unwavering support throughout this endeavor,” Commodore Tawake said.
