A total of 64,958 trees have been planted across Fiji since January through the Ministry of Forestry’s 4 Million Trees in 4 Years initiative.

This was revealed by Commissioner Northern Jovesa Vocea during the International Day of Forests celebration at Bulavou District School in Labasa on Thursday. Of this total (64,958) the Northern Division planted 56,188.

“The theme for this year’s celebration is Forests and Education and is fitting as the urgency to protect and conserve existing forests and to restore degraded and deforested land is now felt by many,” Mr Vocea said.

“It is a day to celebrate and raise awareness on the importance of all types of trees and there is no one better to celebrate it with, then with our children who will be the custodians of these silent providers in years to come.”

“The Ministry of Forestry in the Northern Division visited 72 schools this year and the students planted 4504 trees, contributing 0.06 per cent to the national planting target of the 4million trees campaign,” he said.

“Congratulations to Lavena District School and Saqani District School for planting the highest number of trees during the International Day of Forests Campaign last three weeks.”

Forests will be more important than ever as the world population climbs to 8.5 billion by 2030.”
