6593 court cases pending
Civil cases dominated the backlog with 2083 pending in the High Court.

The total number of pending cases across Fiji’s High Court, Court of Appeal, and Supreme Court stood at 6593 as of January, according to statistics presented in Parliament.
This information was provided in response to a written question from Opposition Member of Parliament, Faiyaz Koya to the Minister for Justice, Siromi Turaga during Parliament last month.
The statistics showed that the High Court had the highest number of pending cases with 2819 in January, followed by the Court of Appeal with 689, and the Supreme Court with 105 cases.
A breakdown of the High Court cases revealed that Lautoka had the highest number with 1494 pending cases, followed by Suva with 1033, and Labasa with 292 as of January.
Civil cases dominated the backlog with 2083 pending in the High Court compared to 736 criminal cases nationwide.
The Ministry of Justice stated it was working closely with the Chief Registrar to obtain a more detailed breakdown of the pending cases by type.
