$90,000 Home Destroyed in Fire

A family in Koroqaqa along Baulevu Road outside Nausori Town is homeless after a fire destroyed their home on Wednesday morning.

The National Fire Authority said fire started from the storage area, and the home owner initially tried to put the fire out with a garden hose, the family had to escape when the spread quickly.

The NFA said the estimated cost of damage to the four-bedroom home was estimated between $80,000 to $90,000.

The NFA teams at the Nausori and Nakasi fire stations tended to the fire at about 6am. The home belonged to a 31-year-old taxi driver, who was at home with his wife, two children and mother when the fire occurred.

Investigations underway.

NFA chief executive officer Puamau Sowane expressed concern with the rising number of home fires.

“We are stepping up our Integrated Community Fire Wardens and Emergency Response Framework, an NFA designed and implemented training programme that is conducted free to all communities,” Mr Sowane said.

“It involves two weeks intensive training on firefighting skills concentrating on how to avoid unwanted fires, administrating of basic first aid and responding to any type of emergencies within your community,” he said.
