Growing up, Meli Nakauvadra Tanuku encountered many struggles in his life.

From juggling work and studying at the same time to suffering from anxiety and having it affect his mental health, the youngster said he could no longer cope.

The young native from Bau Village in Tailevu was also brought up in humble beginnings, where everything and anything handed to him was appreciated.

The only solution to overcome everything was to put his faith in God and begin his tertiary-level studies.

Tanuku was selected to study at the Fiji National University (FNU) to pursue a Bachelor of Arts (Education) in Counselling. He said there were many reasons why he chose the programme.

“Firstly, in Fiji right now, there is a need for counsellors, and I feel that it is a life-rewarding career where counsellors get to witness other people’s breakthroughs,” said Tanuku.

“My inspiration came from the struggles I went through in life and also finding simple ways to get through them.”

“I chose FNU because of the nature of the university; it is a dual-sector university that is not only focused on academics but also on vocational and skill-based qualifications.”

Tanuku has future plans to construct his own counselling clinic.

His advice to young people is: “Always see the good in every situation that life throws at you because that is the beauty of being alive. Your mental health is important, so talk to people or seek help if you need to.”
