This coming Saturday will be a fulfilling birthday for Peceli Bakani Vosanibola after he achieved his bachelor’s degree in medicine and Surgery.

The 27-year-old was one of the three students who were sponsored by the Fijian Government to study a bachelor’s in medicine and Bachelor in Surgery (MBBS) in the Republic of Cuba.

They studied in a prestigious medical institute called Escuela Latinoamericana de Medicina, which translates in English as the Latin-American School of Medicine in Havana, Cuba.

At the beginning of this month, the three graduates returned to Fiji after completing their studies.

He said the six years of studying has been quite a challenge.

“For one year we learn Spanish. The lifestyle, culture and the language were a challenge in the first three years in the capital city, but with the help of the seniors, they have guided us through certain challenges,” he said.

“After spending three years studying in the capital city, we are then being posted to the other 14 provinces in Cuba to continue the remaining four years upon completion of the seven years of studies.

“Moreover, life in the province was a huge help as we had direct communication with the locals, which helped us overcome certain challenges.

“We were sent to the province of Ciego de Ávila in the Morón General Hospital and the practical work in the hospital has been a great help to understand more of the theory learned.”

Hailing from Bureta Village in Levuka, with maternal links to Sawaieke, Gau, the 2021 Cuba-Fiji medical graduate said it would be a fulfilling birthday for him this coming Saturday due to his achievements.

“I will be turning 28 on Saturday and it is going to be a special birthday for me. With God, all is possible and that has always helped me persevere more to attain greater things.”

“I am blessed to have completed this course with two amazing colleagues Ratu Epi Vuicuvu and Amele Kurisese Natuaniyavula.

“Finally, this achievement I have dedicated to God, my Vosanibola family, Bakani Family and Vadei Family, friends and most importantly to serve the people of Fiji.”
