No Government should ever be given such powers over the media, says Fijian Media Association general secretary, Stanley Simpson, following the repeal of the Media Industry Development Authority (MIDA) Act 2010.

The act was repealed following a debate and vote in Parliament.

28 voted for, 22 against and three did not vote.

Moving the motion to repeal the act, Attorney-General Siromi Turaga said just laws were pertinent to the protection of everyone’s rights including journalists and media organisations.
