A Gentle Giant Who Has His Qoliqoli At Heart

Midway through our interview, Rusiate Ravulaca Waqata stutters and catches me by surprise as he pauses and struggles to find the right words.

He’s trying to control his emotions.

I had just asked him what drives his passion every single working day of last the 12 years in serving the peo­ple of the Ra province.

“I was raised by my grandparents, me and my cousins, we all lived in their big family home, and I remember those days, my grand­father used to leave to go fishing at night, after telling us bedtime stories.

“It was the best times because he’d arrive on the same night with an abundant catch, and we would have fish for breakfast.

“Those were memorable times, but it’s come and gone, just as quickly!”

Rusiate is the Service Center Manager for the Ministry of Fish­eries Rakiraki office.
