Second-Lieutenant Max Taylor Delai made history this week as Fiji’s first graduate from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.

He was one of 26 cadets who graduated from the prestigious academy.

Over the past four and a half years, the Vione, Gau native overcame challenges through grit, tenacity and sheer force of will.

His parents and Fiji’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Filipo Tarakinikini were present at the graduation. They symbolically pinned on the Second Lieutenants’ new rank which will be officially bestowed when he returns home.

Second-Lieutenant Delai also received his Bachelor of Science in Geospatial Information Science from the West Point Superintendent.

On the rugby field his real passion and skill for the game shone through.

In an interview before his departure for Westpoint four years ago, the then-cadet had said: “I had always been part of the Scouts programme in primary school, Barracks Week in high School and was impressed by the commands demanded from its leaders that has moulded the drive in me to become a leader in my military career.

“Come to think about it now, that was a ridiculous dream because Fiji has no Air Force planes. However, this opportunity to attend West Point Military Academy means that anything is possible if you believe.”

Four years later, Second Lieutenant Delai has proven that dreams can come true.
