Stories of humility and quiet leadership have emerged as tributes continue for the late Ratu Epeli Nailatikau, with those who knew him recalling a leader who chose to stand with his people rather than above them.
Retired serviceman Josefa Bolaqace described the former Republic of Fiji Military Forces Commander as disciplined yet approachable — a man whose leadership was felt in everyday actions.
He said one of the most important lessons he learned from the late Turaga mai Naisogolaca was time management, noting that punctuality and commitment were values he consistently demonstrated.

“As a leader, he was always on time and expected the same from others,” Mr Bolaqace said.
The Fiji Ex-Servicemen association paid their respects to the Vanua o Kubuna yesterday at the State House on the passing of Ratu Epeli.
Mr Bolaqace said many former servicemen gathered out of loyalty, remembering the man who once commanded them and shaped their lives.
Ratu Epeli served as RFMF Commander from 1982 to 1987.
Mr Bolaqace said beyond the uniform, he was known for his warmth, often engaging freely with people regardless of status.
That same image was echoed by Roko Tui Lau Jioji Kalounivalu, who said the vanua of Lau came together in full to present their reguregu in honour of the late statesman.
He described Ratu Epeli as a leader grounded in culture and humility.
“He was very down-to-earth. You would see him among the people, joking and talking with them,” Mr Kalounivalu said.
He recalled a moment that captured his character — choosing to sit outside with the people during a community gathering rather than taking a formal seat.
“Those are the kind of qualities he had,” he said.
“Fiji was fortunate to have a leader of such humility despite his high chiefly status.”
Mr Kalounivalu also offered prayers for the grieving family and said the late President’s legacy of discipline, humility and service should continue to guide the nation.
