People have been abandoning their pets at the doorsteps of the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), in Walu Bay.
Clinic and shelter manager Shaneel Narayan said this was an ongoing issue where puppies and kittens were dropped off in boxes outside the shelter.
“We have been getting litter of animals dumped at parks, roadsides and even outside the SPCA,” Mr Narayan said.

“We have been getting a mix of both male and female puppies, but most of the boxes include female animals.
“It is common to see female animals being dropped more often than a male.
“Even if people prefer to keep few puppies from a litter, they would keep a male and drop a female at the SPCA. Adoption-wise too people prefer to adopt male animal over a female,” he added.
Mr Narayan is urging people to get their pets neutered so their lives don’t become an ongoing cycle of mating and birthing.
“Female animals make good pets as a male animal. Please get your pets neutered because it is safe, affordable and a kind procedure which ensures health of both the pets and their families,” Mr Narayan said.
