About 15 women who presented themselves at the Colonial War Memorial (CWM) Hospital in Suva this year have been diagnosed with breast cancer.

Consultant Neurologist Dr Rajeev Patel, based at the CWM Hospital, highlighted this during a cancer awareness programme organised by the University of the South Pacific, Lautoka Campus on Wednesday.

“Breast cancer is common with the middle-aged group of women,” he said.

“At CWM alone, we have probably diagnosed about 15 or 20 cases this year for breast cancer.”

He said the hospital had been receiving more cancer cases, which meant that the awareness programmes were playing a vital role to the public.

“So programmes like this during the month of October and November, is where we get more awareness. When women produce themselves in the early stage, they have a higher chance of living longer,” she said.

Dr Patel also said that about 10 or 15 years ago people were producing themselves to medical professionals late when the cancer was close to reaching its final stage.
