About 800 people in Fiji need dialysis every year.
Renowned local surgeon Dr Eddie Hansel McCaig highlighted this during the universal coverage and basic healthcare panel session during the National Economic Summit at the Grand Pacific Hotel, Suva on Thursday.
Topping the radar in the medical field are the big number of Fijian diagnosed with non-communicable diseases (NDCs).

“I said to a group next door, is NCDs a problem in this country, oh hell yeah,” Dr McCaig said.
“We know for sure, 15.8 per cent of our population have NCDs which is diabetes.mAnd 60 per cent of those admitted to hospital right now have diabetes.”
