Achal Shuruti Singh, 20, always asks for advice from her mother before making any decisions, but this time it was different.
The former Mahatma Gandhi Memorial High School student took it upon herself for the first time to undergo the Deck Hand Fishing Certificate and the Basic Sea Safety-Fishing Vessels Certificate from Fiji National University.
On Friday, she was one of the 23 females who graduated from the Deckhand Fishing Programme.

Her mother, Yogeshni Singh, said she was proud of her only daughter.
“She is the youngest of four siblings. When she selected this course, I was a little scared. When she showed her interest, I knew that I had to support her because this was the first time she had made a choice by herself,” Ms Singh said.
“She used to ask me for my opinion before making decisions, but this time it was different. My husband and I told her that we would support her in whatever she chose.”
