Just three days into the role, Acting Commissioner of the Fiji Corrections Service (FCS), Sevuloni Naucukidi, has introduced sweeping changes to its medical staff.

This follows the suspension of Commissioner Jalesi Nakarawa over allegations of misconduct.

The Acting Commissioner's decision comes amid claims that the suspended Commissioner appointed his wife as a nursing practitioner within the institution he oversaw.

A photo later surfaced on social media of Ms Nakarawa wearing an FCS uniform of a Superintendent rank.

Acting Commissioner Naucukidi has ordered that, effective immediately, all medical staff return to their original positions as professional medical civilians and will no longer wear uniforms while on duty.

In a memo sent to all FCS staff on April 2, Acting Commissioner Naucukidi underscored these changes, stating that all nurse practitioners and registered nurses would be redeployed to work in the infirmaries of their respective institutions and divisions.

These staff members will report to their supervisors for day-to-day operational matters.

Additionally, the Acting Commissioner directed that the Medics Unit's dedicated vehicle be returned to the pool under the command of the Officer in Charge (OC) of the Tactical Response Unit (TRP). All future vehicle requests must be submitted to him as required.

The suspension of Nakarawa is currently under investigation by a tribunal, which will examine allegations of nepotism and other claims against him.
