Tears flowed freely as Adi Sera Gonerara’s name was announced during the Fiji National University graduation ceremony on Wednesday.
Holding her Diploma in Customs certificate, she wished her dad was there to witness her accomplishment.
Originally from Navola on the Coral Coast of Nadroga, and with maternal ties to Namata, Bau, in Tailevu, Adi Sera’s journey was filled with uphill battles.

During studies, her greatest supporter and father fell gravely ill.
She took a semester off to care for him, but before she could return to classes, he passed away.
“I’ve been raised by a legend, who told me before his passing that even if he may not be around, promise me you’ll finish this,” Adi Sera said.
Education is a key her dad never enjoyed, but she want to pursue it whole-heartedly.
With her father gone, the weight of responsibility fell on her mother, Mereani Dua, who now takes on the duties of mother and father to seven children.
Ms Dua still goes out to sea, catching fish and selling them at the market to support the family.
Holding her daughter tight, Ms Dua, whispered through tears: “Your father would be so proud of you. You didn’t just carry his dream—you lived it.”
“My mum is my hero. She carried the duty my father left behind with strength and love,” Adi Sera said.
Despite emotional pain and financial hardships, Adi Sera forged ahead and is now the first in her family to graduate.
Her diploma is more than a qualification. It’s a promise kept as a tribute to her late father.
