Akbar Gives A Clean Bill For Villages On Ono-I-Lau, No Disease Outbreak On Island

A Ministry of Health and Medical Services assess­ment team at Ono-i-Lau has revealed that there is no disease outbreak in the further most is­land of Southern Lau Group.

Minister for Health and Medical Services Rosy Akbar has commend­ed Southern Lau villagers for play­ing their part and setting a good ex­ample to other local communities around Fiji.

“The four villages at Ono-i-Lau; Motokana, Lovoni, Nukuni and Doi were well prepared for and after the cyclone,” Ms Akbar said.

“After the cyclone they cleaned their surroundings and destroyed mosquitos breeding places. The high season for dengue fever in Fiji traditionally arrives with the rainy season in November and continues till April.

“The increased rainfall can fill containers with water to create breeding grounds for mosquitos, which can carry the dengue virus.

“The ministry is urging commu­nities around Fiji to be proactive about emptying water containers, covering water drums and tanks and disposing of unused tyres, drums and other water containers to combat mosquito breeding and limit the spread of the dengue vi­rus.

“This village has set a good exam­ple to other local communities,” she said.

Ms Akbar said health assessment team sprayed around the villages for preventative measures.

“It is better to take precaution measures and this was to ensure that all breeding places of the mos­quitos were destroyed,” she said.

“Also the medical team conducted health check-up for about 120 chil­dren around the four villages at Ono-i-Lau.

“Dengue fever can be compacted, people need to take ownership and join the ministry in the fight the bite campaign,” she said.
