The Ministry of Women, Children, and Social Protection is sounding the alarm after a shocking incident in Lautoka, where a three-month-old baby was found alone, sleeping in a locked car.

The parents of the infant were reportedly inside a nearby store, shopping while their child was left unattended.

Authorities are now urging parents to ensure the safety and well-being of their children at all times.

“In the extreme heat, it is a miracle the child survived. Thanks to the quick actions of a passerby and the police, the baby was rescued and the matter is now under police investigation for negligence,” Line minister Sashi Kiran said.

She said the alleged incident highlighted serious concerns about awareness around parenting and child safety.

“Leaving a child unattended in a vehicle, even for a short time, is extremely dangerous and unacceptable. We urge parents to always prioritise their children’s safety,” Ms Kiran said.

Ms Kiran said cases of child neglect were on the rise as family networks and social support systems continued to weaken.

To assist struggling parents, the ministry is developing a Positive Parenting App to provide guidance on child care.

Ms Kiran also called on faith groups and family elders to support young parents in developing better parenting skills.

The public is urged to remain vigilant and report any case of child neglect. Under the Child Care and Protection Act 2024, every child has the right to be protected from harm.

The ministry remains committed to strengthening child protection efforts and ensuring that all children in Fiji grow up in a safe and nurturing environment.
