The recent arrest of six Chinese nationals in Fiji’s drug raids has drawn global attention, but both nations emphasise cooperation and respect for the law.
All six, along with two other foreign nationals and two locals, remain in police custody after bail was denied.
Chinese Ambassador Zhou Jian met Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka yesterday, condemning the alleged involvement of his nationals while highlighting China’s support for Fiji’s judicial process.
“We respect your sovereignty. At the same time, these individuals deserve the same rights as any foreigner during legal proceedings,” he said.
Mr Zhou reaffirmed China’s zero-tolerance stance on drugs and reminded citizens to follow local laws abroad.
“No country is stricter than China in enforcing drug laws, but like any nation, criminals exist,” he added.
The ambassador said the case should not affect the strong China-Fiji relationship.
Both countries are committed to working together in trade, infrastructure, and cultural exchanges, ensuring benefits for their people.
Experts note that such high-profile cases are a test of diplomacy and law enforcement, but also an opportunity to strengthen collaboration.
In the Pacific region, countries often face similar challenges balancing justice and international relations, making open dialogue essential.
Fiji’s handling of the case, coupled with China’s pledge of cooperation, reflects a shared commitment to fairness, the rule of law, and deeper bilateral ties.
