Ambulance services have been requested at Korotasere Village in the district of Vaturova, Cakaudrove.

This plea of help was made to the Acting Prime Minister and Attorney-General, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, during his visit to Vunisalusalu Central School on Wednesday.

Vaturova District Representative, Fillmore Vodonaivalu, said there is an urgent need for ambulance services at Korotasere Village Health Centre.

Mr Vodonaivalu said a slight delay in finding a transport for people seeking immediate medical assistance, could result in potential death for the patient.

“We had six deaths in two consecutive weeks, which could have been avoided if ambulance transportation was provided,” he said.

“We had some villagers, who died from COVID-19 while the remaining died from other illnesses at home because transportation was limited.”

According to Mr Vodonaivalu, they had an ambulance stationed at the Korotasere Health Center in the past. However that ambulance is now stationed at the Savusavu Hospital.

He said pregnant mothers and their families in the village had to hire a another transport to travel the long distance to Savusavu or Labasa Hospital which was both difficult and expensive burden.

A request letter was submitted by Mr Vodonaivalu to the Provincial Administrator of Cakaudrove after the internet commission event at Vunisalusalu on Wednesday.

Response

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said they would have to liaise with the Ministry of Health and Medical Services on how best they could assist the health centre and surrounding areas.

“I can definitely get back to you and see what is going to happen in that space,” he added.
