As dawn broke, hundreds stood silent to commemorate the fallen during the ANZAC Day Dawn Service at the Suva Military Cemetery.

The Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC Day) is a national day of celebration to remember servicemen and women who died in wars, peacekeeping duties and also to honour those of the Gallipoli Campaign in the World War.

Ex- serviceman, Warrant Officer (WO1) Aloesi Kaleca was among the hundreds who were present to support ANZAC Day.

“This is an important and special day not only for the Australians and New Zealand but for us Fiji ex-service men,” Mr Kaleca said.

Having served for 18 years in the Republic of Fiji Military Forces, Mr Kaleca then joined the United Nations as a UN Field Service Officer where they were more encounters and training.

“These men had given the best years of their lives and I understand what it is like to know someone who died for their country and I will no doubt stand in support to honour these men and women,” he said.

Mr Kaleca encouraged those in the military to serve with honour and humility.

“Be at the right place, at the right time and remember the military is not for everyone. If you figure out that it is not for you after you join, you do your time and get out,”
