The Assemblies of God (AOG) Fiji has unveiled plans for a $20 million seven-storey building in Suva, aimed at supporting the welfare of retired pastors and their families.

The proposed development, which will serve as the church’s new head office on Robertson Road in Suva, was announced during the AOG Fiji 42nd Biennial Conference this week.

AOG Fiji general secretary, Reverend Filikesa Koroivueti, said members have already raised over $2 million towards the project and hope to increase that amount during a special fundraising today.

“It’s a day we will try to collect more, as there are many other projects in line that we’re focusing on,” Reverend Koroivueti said.

“We reflect on what has happened and how we can do things better to move forward, knowing the Lord’s return is near but we will keep working until he returns.”

He said the church intends to fund the project entirely through member contributions, without taking out loans.

“We want to do this on a cash basis. There are many things we’d like to begin with this property, and avoiding debt gives us more freedom,” he said.

Reverend Koroivueti also revealed that several floors of the building will be leased to the government, with rental income earmarked to support pastors and their families.

“We’re thinking about pastors who have retired or passed on, and the families they’ve left behind. Many have served faithfully but have little to show for it. Our leadership is now thinking seriously about how to provide for their welfare.”

He noted that pastors are often only recognised while in office, and their families are forgotten once they step down.

“Is that fair? These are the things our General Superintendent is already considering including how to support pastors in their daily needs.”

Reverend Koroivueti said the church is also focused on empowering its members to meet the challenges of modern life including emotionally, spiritually, mentally, and physically.
