The Archbishop of the Catholic Church in Fiji, Peter Loy Chong, has told Pope Francis that the Oceania priests have a duty towards the people of the islands.

Catholics priests, who form the Episcopal Conference of the Pacific (CEPAC), had an opportunity to have an audience with Pope Francis in Vatican City and brief him of what was happening in their respective countries.

Archbishop Loy Chong said it was a momentous occasion as he posted details on the Archdiocese of Fiji page.

“I am blessed to once again meet Pope Francis after the Oceania Catholic Bishops audience with the Pope,” he said.

“I gave a brief report on how the Bishops of Oceania plan to be a prophetic voice for the island people.

“Pope Francis wanted our meeting to be like a talanoa or conversation. Pope Francis was in a joyful mood-engaged energetically with us, smiling, telling short stories here and there.”

Archbishop Loy Chong said Pope Francis was very humble.

“We have a down to earth human Pope. Let us continue to support and pray for Pope Francis’ leadership and vision,” he said.

Vatican City, a city-state surrounded by Rome, Italy, is the headquarters of the Roman Catholic Church. It’s home to the Pope and a trove of iconic art and architecture.
