Ashleen, first in family to receive Dux Award
From her humble abode in Taveuni, Ashleen Chand firmly believes that education is the only way to overcome hardships. The 19-year-old was the first in her family to scoop a Dux Award during Bucalevu Secondary School’s prize giving ceremony in Taveuni.

From her humble abode in Taveuni, Ashleen Chand firmly believes that education is the only way to overcome hardships.
The 19-year-old was the first in her family to scoop a Dux Award during Bucalevu Secondary School’s prize giving ceremony in Taveuni.
Having lived in the outskirts without electricity and proper water source, Ashleen knew working hard at school was the only way she could improve her standard of living.

“I lived in Qarawalu, Taveuni, for several years without electricity and the only source of water was rainwater.
“We survived on solar power, however, during rainy weather the light became very dim and I had to use the kerosene lamp to study.”
Sacrifices
Ashleen, who now resides in Nayalayala said her many years of hurdles finally paid off.
“Three years ago, the situation in Nayalayala was the same as Qarawalu, I studied using solar light and kerosene lamps,” she said.
“Today, I am the first in the family to get a Dux Award.”
The 19-year-old dedicated her achievements to her parents and said her inspiration to do well in school was her mother.
“My parents always told me about the hardships they faced.
“They told me they did not want to see me struggle like them."
"They reminded me that studying was the only way to overcome hardships.”
Ashleen hopes to pursue a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) in Suva.
