Australian And New Zealand High Commissioners Gather In Spirit

The High Commissioner of Australia to Fiji John Feakes will be laying a wreath at 10am today at the Suva Military Cemetery to mark the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) Day.
Mr Feakes said while there will be no commemorative service for ANZAC Day in Fiji because of COVID-19 restrictions, Australia and New Zealand high commissioners will gather in spirit.

ANZAC Day is also about when Pacific Islanders, Australians and New Zealanders fought together during the Second World War. Fijian troops fought alongside New Zealanders and Australian Coast Watchers in the Solomon Islands Campaign and on into Bougainville.
Mr Feakes adds ANZAC Day is not about glorifying war, but it is about commemorating those in the armed forces who have served and continued to serve.
“In Fiji, we particularly commemorate Fiji’s support to Australia and New Zealand during the World War, in Solomon Islands and the sacrifices that the Republic of the Military Forces (RFMF) have made of peacekeeping missions over 40 years. This is a record of bravery, sacrifice and honour which all Fijians should be proud of.
“For Australia and New Zealand, our relationship was cemented six years ago, and it continues to strengthen, and these are some of the common values we share with New Zealand and Fiji and those values are never more important than they are now,” Mr Feakes said.
He added that they acknowledge the continued service of brave women and men who represent their country on a daily basis.
