The safety and well-being of pedestrians, particularly children, remains a top priority for the Land Transport Authority (LTA).
Despite ongoing efforts to educate and raise awareness about road safety through school visitations and demonstrations by road safety education teams, it acknowledged that accidents continue to happen such as a recent incident involving some students in Labasa.
On Monday, a Year Two student was allegedly bumped by a taxi while crossing the road at Nailawa, Labasa, at 3pm.

The child suffered from head injuries and was rushed to the Labasa Hospital for treatment.
Last Thursday, a Year 13 student, while being transported to school on a private vehicle was involved in an accident.
She wore a seat belt in the vehicle she was travelling, in which was from behind by a vehicle sub-contracted to the Fiji Roads Authority between.
She was admitted at the Labasa Hospital with internal injuries.
Last month, a Year 13 student had to be taken to Labasa Hospital after a taxi allegedly drove over his foot in Labasa Town between 3:20pm to 4pm.
Divisional Police Commander (DPC) North Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kemueli Baledrokadroka said investigations were underway.
LTA’s stand
Land Transport Authority (LTA) acting chief executive officer Irimaia Rokosawa said they remained committed to taking proactive measures to prevent accidents.
“In collaboration with educators, Fiji Police Force, parents and guardians, the LTA continues to emphasise the importance of vigilance when using roads,” Mr Rokosawa said.
Awareness programmes
From January 2024 to March, the LTA has conducted 125 school education and awareness impacting 16,791 students, 13 public outreach impacting 2628 people, 92 office outreach impacting 5078 office workers, 99 driver roadside awareness impacting 9512 drivers, 79 passenger roadside awareness impacting 58,188 passengers, 163 pedestrian roadside awareness impacting 16,869 pedestrians and 426 community outreach programme.
