Supporters greet Sayed-khaiyum's arrival amidst ongoing legal proceedings

Former Attorney-General and Minister for Economy, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, has return to Fiji with his family after undergoing a medical surgery in Singapore.
The Suva Magistrate court on September 13, had granted him leave to travel for the treatment.
His return yesterday debunks rumours that he would not return.

Mr. Sayed-Khaiyum, who faces one count of abuse of office, had missed a court appearance on November 16.
His lawyer, Devanesh Sharma, inform the court that he had undergone surgery in Singapore and requested an extension of his stay until the end of December.
Upon his arrival at Nadi International Airport, supporters of the FijiFirst party greeted Sayed-Khaiyum.
Abdul Zorhab, a close supporter, expressed happiness at seeing him back in the country.
Mr Zorhab acknowledged the challenges ahead, saying “His sores are fresh; it will take time to heal.”
Efforts to obtain a comment from Sayed-Khaiyum were unsuccessful when this edition went to the press.
FijiFirst registered officer and Opposition Member of Parliament, Faiyaz Koya, claimed he as unaware of Sayed-Khaiyum’s return, suggesting reaching out to him directly for information.
As part of the legal proceedings, Sayed-Khaiyum has been ordered to surrender his passport to the court’s criminal registry upon returning from his medical procedure.
The court, during the November 16 hearing, had indicated that if Sayed-Khaiyum failed to return by mid-January next year, alternative measures would be considered.
The case is scheduled to be heard again before Chief Magistrate Waleen George on January 16, 2024.
