Commissioner Jalesi Nakarawa has clarified that former Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama has been provided with a mobile telephone while serving his sentence as it is crucial for his health management.

Commissioner Nakarawa emphasised that while there may be differences in the management of inmates based on their individual circumstances, these measures were always implemented to ensure the safety, security, and well-being of all parties involved.

“The FCS adheres to protocols that ensure equal treatment of all inmates, regardless of their status. However, FCS recognises that different inmates have different needs based on their security classifications (minimum, medium, or maximum) and medical conditions,” Mr Nakarawa said.

“In particular, we wish to address the specific medical needs of former Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama. Mr Bainimarama has been provided with a mobile telephone, which is crucial for his health management,” he said.

“The device is connected to his pacer, allowing real-time transmission of his heart condition data directly to his medical team in Melbourne. This allocation was not only based on medical necessity but is also part of the court order accompanying his conviction.

“FCS is committed to upholding the health, safety, and dignity of all individuals in our custody.”

Mr Nakarawa said their protocols were designed to ensure that all inmates received appropriate care according to their security classification and medical needs.

“The provisions made for Mr Bainimarama are consistent with our policy of accommodating necessary medical requirements, as supported by court directives,” Mr Nakarawa said.

“Each inmate is treated fairly, with policies applied consistently in line with legal and medical guidelines.”
