Kadavu lass Sainimili Bainivalu, 17, walked away with the best science student and dux prizes at the Adi Cakobau School prizegiving ceremony at Sawani, Naitasiri yesterday.

Her parents Semisi and Siteri Bainivalu jumped with joy when they heard their daughter's name being announced during the ceremony.

"When I entered the school in Year 10, my main goal was to get the dux prize like my mother," Sainimili said.

"As I progressed and reaching second place in my exams was something I didn' t like.

"I had to prove that second place wasn' t an option. I need to be on the top.

"It's quite hard to think back five years ago when I first entered the school and I wanted so badly to put my name on top of the school's roll of honour. I finally did it."

She is from Tabuya Village in Kadavu and the second-eldest of four siblings.

"Receiving the school dux award is my dream come true and my goal now is to become a doctor because I love helping people and I want to reach that goal."
