Bala’s Visit To Cyclone Victims Gives Hope

Since Sunday, Munesh Wargoundar of Korotale Settlement in Ra has been at his wit’s end after a landslide took part of his home downhill.

But a pleasant visit from the Minister for Youth and Sport Parveen Bala gave him hope and assured him that help was on the way.

The remainder of his home stands unsteadily while he has lost his livestock as a result of the destructive impact of Tropical Cyclone Ana.

On Monday, authorities confirmed that they were aware of the landslide but could not gain access to the home because of severe weather conditions.

Despite the flooded rivers, Mr Bala braved the conditions to visit the family.

Mr Wargoundar, who is physically-impaired, said when he heard the winds gusting, he did not know what to do to make his family feel safe.

“Everything happened so quickly, and we have not had anyone visit us yet apart from the community members,” Mr Wargoundar said.

“I cannot tell you how happy I am that the first person who came to our rescue is a Member of Parliament himself.

“My heart feels lighter knowing that if he was able to brave the flooded rivers more help is on its way.”

Mr Bala said: “It’s unfortunate that the house and the belongings have been destroyed due to the landslide but fortunately the family of seven are safe.”

Mr Wargoundar was living in the settlement with his, wife, three sons, a daughter and his mother.
