Talks to ban or regulate access to pornographic websites are well underway.

Minister for Women, Children and Social Protection Lynda Tabuya said the statistics of sexual offences in June alone was 55, and the ministry was concerned with this figure.

"This is an alarming figure, especially noting the young ages of perpetrators and victims, and a huge concern for the Government," Ms Tabuya said.

"There is anecdotal evidence worldwide that connects pornography to the increase in sexual offences," she said.

“Pornography should be regulated or banned altogether if we are to deal with this scourge.”

Fiji was ranked in the top 10 countries in the world in terms of the percentage of searches for the word ‘porn’, according to figures compiled by Google Trends.

Ms Tabuya said the ministry was in the process of engaging with international experts and community organisations that are dealing with the issue of pornography.

“The campaign we are calling is Fight the New Drug, mirrored on the worldwide movement of the fight against pornography.

“The effects of pornography on the human brain are the same as cocaine. Thus, the reference of calling it the new drug.”
