A barber shop operator in Labasa Town has never regretted being part of the hairdressing profession because he was able to continue supporting his family during this COVID-19 crisis.

Sharan Chand, who operates his own barber shop, Chand’s Barbershop, said he was fortunate to earn an income daily when compared to some white-collar employees, who are on reduced hours.

“From my income, I am also able to contribute some money to supporting needy families in the greater Labasa area,” Mr Chand said.

He said they had a youth group in the area ‘Vunika Sangeet Sitare’ where youths, who are working, made contributions to assist families affected by the pandemic.

Mr Chand, who began his business last September, said his hairdressing skills, learned from the institute – ‘PIVOT Point Training and Education Fiji’ – based in Lautoka, had given him a life-sustaining job.

“Never think any job is ordinary and make every effort possible to showcase and grow your business, personality and working ability,” he encouraged others.

Mr Chand is hoping for increased business activity once inter-island travel resumes and restrictions are relaxed.

Education

Mr Chand attended All Saints Secondary School from Year 9 till Year 13, after which he enrolled in the Bachelor of Agriculture degree programme in Labasa.

He was still studying in his second year when he was approached by one of his friends, who is also a barber in Town to venture into this new field.

“My parents disagreed with my new field; however, my girlfriend was able to make them understand that the profession was profitable,” he said.

After gaining approval from his parents, he travelled to Lautoka and enrolled to complete his Certificate three in Men’s Barbering from PIVOT Point Training and Education Centre and graduated in March last year.

Future

Mr Chand hopes to one day open a high class and professional hairdressing salon in one of the hotspot locations in town.

“I am currently operating from the RB Patel upstairs building and encourage those who are not aware of my services to make a visit and see first-hand the hairdressing techniques I provide to my customers,” he added.
