Prominent Australian-based lawyer Filipe Batiwale has been appointed Commissioner for the Online Safety Commission Fiji.

Mr Batiwale is a dedicated senior lawyer with a current practising certificate in Australia, specialising in commercial law, cyber law, and digital asset protection.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade Cooperatives, Micro, SMEs, and Communication, Manoa Kamikamica said with over seven years of experience in cyber law and digital asset protection, he was an invaluable addition to the commission.

Mr Kamikamica said Mr Batiwale would take office effect immediately.

“Mr Batiwale’s expertise in online safety and commitment to protecting the digital rights of all users will further our mission to create a safer internet for everyone,” Mr Kamikamica said.

Mr Batiwale is a seasoned lawyer with a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Canterbury that complements his practical knowledge in both commercial law and cyber law.

He will play a key role in shaping policies, enhancing educational initiatives, and advocating for better protections for online users.

“I am deeply honoured to be appointed as Fiji’s Online Safety Commissioner,” Mr Batiwale said.

“I look forward to serving the people of Fiji and addressing the challenges we face in the online space.

“The growing prevalence of online harm underscores the importance of the Commission’s work, and there is much to be done to create safer digital environments.

“My focus will be on ensuring the Commission effectively fulfills its functions under the Online Safety Act, working collaboratively with stakeholders to promote accountability, education, and responsible online interactions.”
