The Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF) has urged the public to prioritise safety and adhere to maritime laws while planning their festive trips to the outer islands.
MSAF chief executive officer, Commander Joweli Cawaki, stressed the importance of proper trip planning, scheduling, and adherence to maritime laws and regulations to ensure the safety of all passengers travelling by sea.
Commander Cawaki said vessel operators were advised to adhere to these guidelines to prevent any unfortunate incidents.

“The public and stakeholders are strongly urged to plan their island visits with precision,” Commander Cawaki said.
“Thoughtful timetabling and scheduling not only facilitate a seamless travel experience but also aid vessel operators in efficiently managing passenger loads.”
He said masters were reminded to fulfil their duties diligently, including monitoring passenger loads, complying with safety protocols, and being prepared to handle emergencies.
“In a joint effort with various agencies, the MSAF announces its commitment to heighten surveillance activities around the main ports and jetties,” he added.
