44 students inducted as school leaders

Be the best you can be,Nadi Airport School prefects have been told.

The advice came from chief guest and Yees Cold Storage director, Do­reen Yee. Forty four prefects were badged last week.

“I encourage all seniors (Year Eight) that you should also em­brace it as your own,” she said.

She shared the three key points – setting a good example, follow the rules, and being there for students.

“To be the best prefect is to re­member your role which is to help both the teachers and the students by setting good example, following school rules and being there when people need you, by ensuring you are successfully fulfiling all your duties as a prefect,” Ms Yee said.

She reiterated what the famous American author, Harriett Jackson Brown Jr, once said: “Never stop do­ing your best just because someone doesn’t give you credit. If you’re do­ing your best, you won’t have time to worry about failure.”

Ms Yee, 40 years ago became the first New Zealand-trained teacher to join the Nadi Airport School committee.

But the school was established in 1948 by the South Pacific Air Trans­port Council (SPATC) to cater for the primary education of expatri­ate families working at Nadi Air­port.

The school catered for non – SPATC families living around Nadi. SPATC provided for all school needs.

Three students, Lance Blumhard, Michael Pike and Robin Pike were enrolled on 26/01/1948.

Thirteen more joined the school between March and October the same year, increasing the school roll to 16. In the year 1976, Nadi Airport School was under the New Zealand Education Board and the school mainly had expatriate stu­dents. All its staff and curriculum resources came from New Zealand.

In October 1979 the ownership of the school buildings was trans­ferred to the newly formed Civil Aviation Authority of Fiji.

The operation of the school was assumed by the Nadi Airport Com­munity through an elected commit­tee in 1980.

The school came under the Fijian Government’s Ministry of Educa­tion.
