More than 110 kilogrammes of rubbish were collected in just over an hour as tourists and staff from the South Sea Cruise Group (SSCG) marked World Earth Day 2025 with a beach clean up at Wailoaloa Beach last Wednesday.
Held under this year’s global theme, ‘Our Power, Our Planet,’ the initiative saw SSCG employees from various departments remove litter such as glass bottles, plastic packaging, foam, and aluminum cans.
Rubbish was sorted into categories—plastics, glass, cans, and other materials—then weighed to assess pollution levels affecting the beach. Glass and plastic waste emerged as most common pollutants.

The clean up followed the Easter weekend period when Wailoaloa Beach becomes a popular destination for family outings. Many left behind significant litter across the shoreline.
SSCG general manager - people and culture, Alalaini Naqoli, said they were pleased to welcome tourists and families of SSCG employees who joined the effort, adding a personal and communal spirit to the initiative.
“The team concluded with refreshments and a volleyball game,” she said.

“The event not only removed visible rubbish, but also brought attention to critical issues facing our coastlines — pollution, the urgent need for greater public awareness, and the importance of stronger waste management support.”
Through hands-on action, the SSCG team demonstrated the power individuals and businesses have to protect our natural resources and promote environmental stewardship. She also emphasised SSCG’s long-term dedication to sustainability and community wellbeing.
“This event reinforces our pledge to care for the oceans that are vital to Fiji’s way of life, environment, and tourism industry.”
“Vinaka vakalevu to all our SSCG teams, supporters, tourists, and family members who made the event a success. Together, we can — and must — be champions for our ocean and our planet,” Ms Naqoli added.
