The Chinese Embassy says Fiji and China are entering “a new chapter” in their long-standing friendship as Beijing prepares to launch a commemorative cover marking 50 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

Counsellor of the Chinese Embassy, Wang Yuan, made the remarks during a media briefing ahead of the official event yesterday.

Mr Wang said the Fiji–China relationship continues to strengthen because both nations “share trust, respect, and a common dream for development.”

“China and Fiji are good friends and reliable partners,” he said. “As we celebrate 50 years of diplomatic ties, we are ready to write a new chapter together.”

The briefing also highlighted China’s major political meeting, the Fourth Plenary Session of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, held from October 20 to 23 in Beijing.

Mr Wang said China’s development over recent decades has been driven by long-term planning and consistent policy.

“A foreign leader once told President Xi that China always makes plans and China always delivers,” he said.

“Our development has lifted millions out of poverty and built the world’s second-largest economy.”

He said the embassy wants Fijian media to have a clearer understanding of China’s development model and how it relates to Fiji.

Mr Wang added that China’s progress in technology, manufacturing, poverty reduction and digital development has created new opportunities for cooperation.

“Our friendship with Fiji will only grow stronger,” he said.

“In the next five years, we expect more cooperation in trade, education, technology and people-to-people exchanges.”
