Big Plans In Place To Extend, Upgrade Markets Around The Country: Minister

Construction works to upgrade the new Laqere Market into a two-storey structure will start next year.
Minister for Local Government Premila Kumar said a supermarket and other retail facilities could be created within the $7 million market.
The market was officially opened in May last year.

She said given there were no cyclones, they would advertise for the construction in either March or April next year.
She said the final designs had been approved.
Ms Kumar said she was happy to see the Flagstaff minimarket project get off to a start. She said for the Raiwaqa mini-market, the proposal is to have a market constructed where the current temporary market is.
She said a two-storey structure was being looked at for this project as well.
In Levuka, a detailed design for a new market facility has been completed and they aim to have a groundbreaking ceremony for the project by January next year.
She said they were working with the Ministry of Commerce to get the Geotech survey done.
For Savusavu, a design for a two-storey structure has been completed. It would have a conference centre on top along with a food court and space area for small businesses.
Ms Kumar said the design was such that the food court and conference centre would be accessible even after the market was closed.
Work for the extension of Ba Market has also started.
