Dreketi Central College headboy Iliesa Mataqeledra, 17, dedicated his leadership achievement to his late namesake father, who died recently.
The Nadoviri Settlement, Macuata lad, described it wasn’t easy to return to school on January 28, few days after his father died.
“Being the youngest of four siblings, I had to be strong for my mother and return to school,” Iliesa said.

“I didn’t know that the teachers chose me to be the headboy until last Friday during the prefect induction.”
The aspiring civil engineer said he was the first in his family to become a headboy and thanked the teachers for the opportunity.
Headgirl Patrica Cox, 18, of Matasawalevu Settlement, Macuata, also thanked the teachers for selecting her.
“Since my father is in Australia and mother in Suva, I have been living with my elderly grandfather and three siblings,” the aspiring pilot said.
“As the eldest in the family, I carry out the house chores, so I never thought of being the headgirl of the school my aim is to score the highest for the school.”
She is originally from Mali Island. She said her grandfather, John Cox was proud of her for getting the leadership role.
